Bavaria rethinks its bear welcome
A wild bear roaming the German countryside is "out of control and should be captured or killed", said Bavaria's environment minister.
A wild bear roaming the German countryside is "out of control and should be captured or killed," said Bavaria's environment minister on Monday 22nd. On Sunday, the bear was welcome in Bavaria. Now Germans are being told stay away from the animal.
A dozen sheep carcasses have been found, suggesting the bear has learned to hunt for food near farms and houses. Joern Ehlers of the WWF told German radio that it was odd that the beast was seeking out food in the vicinity of humans.
Top-selling German daily Bild plastered a big picture of the bear with a hunters bull's eye on it's front page, along with the headline "Death Sentence for German Bears!" In a page article, the paper showed the sheep carcasses alongside their owners."It gutted them and just ate their hearts and livers," the paper quoted farmer Anton W. (42) as saying.
