1.4 Million school children decide school's not for them

Statistics show that 1 in 5 (1.4 million) children played truancy last year... Nearly £1Bn was spent to crack down on truancy last year, but did that really work? These numbers are rising despite repeated attemps to stop truancy from the Government and parents.
Children that truant will cause their parents to face an automatic prosecution if the child's attendence doesn't improve over 12 weeks. "Children who bunk off lessons and stuff should be punished, not the parents," Vikramjeet, a year 10 student from Greenford High School said.
Although the Government has stated that although truancy levels are rising, the amount of time they do it for is lowering. Headteachers around England are shocked with the statistics, describing them as "disappointing and frustrating".
Part of the reasons students truant may include that lessons are getting harder and peer pressure. Whatever the reasons, something has to be done about this ever-growing problem.
