KIDS WARNED TO LAY OFF CRISPS?
The British Heart Foundation (BHF) has claimed that eating a packet of crisps each day is the equivalent of drinking almost five litres of cooking oil a year.
The British Heart Foundation (BHF) has claimed that eating a packet of crisps each day is the equivalent of drinking almost five litres of cooking oil a year.
50% of children in England eat at least one packet of crisps each day, a recent survey found out. Furthermore, one in five children in the age group of 8 to 15 were eating at least two packets of crisps a day, which is the equivalent to a staggering nine litres of cooking oil a year. A 35g crisp packet had two and a half teaspoons of oil. From around 2004, new schemes were being introduced to tackle this issue but not much progress was made. However, a year later, Jamie Oliver, a very talented chef, came up with an idea that rocked the country. He replaced junk food in the school canteen with healthy food. In 2006, he went back to these schools to check on their progress and the state of school food was vastly improving.
The hidden ingredients in crisps, like fats, salts and sugars are making children in our generation obese and we all need to stop this. There are more cases of long term diseases and attacks than ever before. Rahill, a year 10 student from Greenford High School said: "It's very bad and the canteens should be sorted out".
The question lies within ourselves to make a difference- will oil overcome our kids?
