MOTORISTS DRIVING POLICE UP THE WALL
Huge increase in drivers using mobile phones while behind the wheel.
There is to be a crackdown on motorists using mobile phones throughout the country in the coming months. Police are focusing on Suffolk and Essex in particular. This is due to the fact that there has been an increase in the number of road accidents involving drivers using their mobile phones whislt behind the wheel. The AA Motoring Trust has revealed that drivers, whether or not they are using hands-free, are four times more likely to have an accident. Police are getting increasingly fustrated with the public continuing to ignore the warnings that they have been given. Already 36 people have been killed this year on Suffolk's roads alone, something which the police feel is far too high. Previously, drivers using their mobile phones or driving without a seatbelt on have been let off with just a warning. Police are now looking to change that to a fixed penalty notice, possibly a fine or maybe even time spent in jail. In Hertford in Essex 32 different motorists were counted using their mobile phones while driving in 3 different roads in the town. Members of the Hertford public do not believe that a £30 fine is strict enough and some are calling for tougher measures. There are already nearly double the amount of penalty tickets issued than in 2004.
