Life-threatening heart problem but won't give up smoking!
Surveys show that only 48% of people who experience life-threatening heart problems, give up smoking.
A European survey shows that only 48% of people who experience heart attacks, blocked or narrowed arteries and angina, give up smoking.
The survey was take in 1999, and again in 2000. The results show that only half of smokers who experience heart problems, actually give it up.
Patients were interviewed 16 months after their hospital treatment, and out of the 2,224 patients who smoked before the illness, only 48% took the doctor's advice to quit.
Young patients, and those who suffer from angina were less likely to give up smoking because of the lack of awareness of their risk.
Another survey will be conducted soon, to see whether the situation has improved. If it hasn't, attempts will be made to further both patients and smoker's knowledge of smoking, and the risks they could face.
