Mass Arrests in Congo
Homeless children and mothers arrested for violent protests over presidential election.
The Congolese capital, Kinshasa was in uproar yesterday as violence erupted on Saturday 11th November, between supporters of Joseph Kabila, President of Congo and Jean Pierre Bemba, Vice-president.
Over 300 homeless citizens, including 15 mothers and 87 children, were rounded up and taken off the streets for "provoking violence and disturbing the peace", according to Interior Minister Denis Kalume. He claimed that the protesters were taken outside the city for social training.
The African nation is currently in a state of high tension as the result of a fiercely contested presidential election was revealed, showing Kabila had 60% of the vote. Years of Tribal conflict that grew into a regional war had put pressure on the election and was beleievd to be a major reason for the clashes of the groups.
Joseph Kabila could set Congo on the road to democracy and peace after decades of war and dictatorship.
