Homelessness and riots in Congo
337 homeless people including 87 children and 15 mothers were arrested for "provoking violence and disturbing the peace."
On the 14th November 2006 many homeless children and others living on the streets of Congo's capital have been accused of starting a protest that led to viloence as the nation awaits presidential election results. Violence errupted on saturday between supporters of president Joseph Kabila and vice president Jean-Pierre Bemba. The two of them were in the presidentual runoff last month.
The government does not appreciate conflict attitude towards the homeless. Kabila invited 50 homeless children to his wedding this year and bought them clothes for the celebration.
A day later the police rounded up all the homeless. Peace keepers from the UN have bought reinforcements to the capital, stepted up and reinforced positions. Riot police guarded important buildings.
Langalanga had this to say " Homeless are often used as scapegoats by politions and government officials seeking to deflect blame for the riots"
