Des O'Connor confirmed to be the new host of channel 4, afternoon quiz show 'Countdown'
Televisions Des O'Connor is confirmed to be the new host of channel 4's, afternoon quiz show 'Countdown'. The 74 year old has signed a major deal with channel 4 believed to be worth over £500,000 a year.
  He will take over from Des Lynam, who has been hosting the show for 18 months since the death of original host Richard Whiteley.
O'Connor has claimed that it would be great to work alongside Carl Vorderman.
"She's great fun and couldn't have been more helpful. I'm really looking forward to being part of the countdown family."
Vorderman, the show's number genius, said: I'm really looking forward to a new year with a new Des. He's got so much energy and enthusiasm he leaves the rest of us exhausted. Hear's to a new Countdown year."
  Having been on air since 1982, Countdown is channel 4's longest-running show.
