Cut down on food packaging? Whatever for!
The goverment are deciding to cut down on food waste products to reduce the amount of packaging that ends up in our household bins.
Supermarkets are trying to reduce the amount of food packaging found in our household bins. At a press conference in London today, the Environment Minister Ben Bradshaw said "Unnesary and exessive packaging and waste contribuites to dangrous climate change. It also adds the cost to local authorites and the public of managing the waste."
He uses examples of excess packaging, such as four apples wrapped in polythene on a plastic tray.
Mr Ben Bradshaws' comments came after disscussions with retailers over what progress they had made in implementing an industry wide policy. The Enviromenal minister had been persuaded that the retailers who represent 92% of the grocery market which would meet the targets set by the goverment to stop the growth in packaging by 2008. Mr Ben Bradshaw also adds "It is importent that people dont see recycling as the best option, it is better then throwing away stuff but reduction is better still."
Hopefully the supermarkets will be able to reduce the amounts of food packaging by 2008, and we can drastically cut down the waste packaging and hope for a greener future.
