Turkey bans YouTube access
Turkish courts ban access to Youtube after finding clips insulting former leader
A ban has been opposed on YouTube access in Turkey, after clips on the popular site were found insulting the former leader and founder of modern Turkey - Mustafar Kemal Ataturk. The Turkish media claim that the clips were a result of a media battle with Greece, with both sides posting insulting videos.
The clip in question appears to brand the Turkish and their former leader as homosexuals. By Turkish law, an offence such as this carries a prison sentence. The Turkish courts have imposed a ban restricting access to the website by Turkish users. Turk Telecom acted quickly and, as soon as the order from the court came through, access to the site was suspended.
After a petition from Turk Telecom, the court ruled later that it would revoke the ban as soon as the offending videos had been removed. YouTube have reportedly now removed the clips, following complaints.
