Miliband Backs EU Action On Greenhouse Gases
David Miliband is trying to put Britain back ahead in the "Cut Emmission stakes"
David Miliband is trying to put Britain back ahead in the "Cut Emmission stakes" as he agrees with tough EU legislation to cut Europe's emissions by at least 20%.
HIs big promise is to cut emissions by between 15 and 25 million tonnes over the next 13 years, enough emissions equal to that of 15 million homes. This is part of the UK's target of cutting emission by 60% between 1990 and 2050. The Labour government has had to suffer the embarrasment of emission levels actually rising in recent years and so some people are questioning whether Labour are committed to reducing carbon emissions at all.
However Tony Blair has travelled to Brussels today to attend an EU summit on cutting greenhouse gases. German chancellor Angela Markel will try to get 25 member states to agree to a 20% cut in 1990 level emissions if the EU were to 'go it alone' in improving earths atmosphere.
