Home secretary John Reid defended his plans to crack down on illegal immigrants as he unveiled his new text message policy. The texting policy would remind immigrants when they're visas were running out. John Reid said plans to start this were a "tiny part" of a new plan to "block the benefits" of Britain to illegal immigrants.
He went on to say that illegal immigrants are unfair to the British public as they " steal taxpayers money and by taking benefits and services such as the NHS". Thats why there is a big amount of time and money being used in order to reduce the amount of illegal immigrants.
The other proposal of ID cards have had mixed reviews. He said that the toried opposed ideas of foreigners all being issued ID cards when they come into the country from 2008. This would mean the Government would be able to keep track on everyone who had entered the country. But the tories opposed the idea.
Many campaigners also disagree with the "get tough" regime and it has been branded unrealistic and inhumane. Campaigners argued that it may leave many people destitute which they reckon will force people into crime
