Sir Menzies Campbell Resigns
Sir Menzies Campbell, leader of the Liberal Democrats to set to resign after Party coup.
Sir Menzies Campbell is set to resign after a party coup. After disastrous results from opinion polls, MPs felt that, in order to remain 'up to date', they needed a new face; one that could not be provided by the 66 year old Menzies Campbell, as he could be 70 at the next election.
Campbell tried to find support in order to continue his role as leader, but, finding none, decided that it was in the interests of the party that he did not start a leadership battle. It is ironic that Charles Kennedy, the previous leader of the party could be leader again, after being ousted by Campbell himself. Campbell was critised for not being at the announcement.
Vince Cable is to lead the party until a contest can be held. the most likely candidate for the leadership position is Nick Clegg, the party's home affairs minister.
