Andy Murray eased through to the second round of the Madrid Masters after defeating Czech Radek Stepanek. The Scot had few problems in seeing him off, winning 6-4 6-1, and finishing in only an hour. Murray has done well, recovering from injury to put in a superb perfomance. He will face Juan Ignacio Chela in the next round who had a bye and is likely to face Rafa Nadal in the third round if he progresses as expected.
The high level of play was maintained throughout and he broke Stepanek in the 10th. The statistic that is sure to shock many is that Stepanek won only 18% of his total return points, with Murray's groundstrokes proving too powerful to deal with.
Murray was delighted with his performance, commenting: "there's no question, this is one of the best matches I've played since I've been on the Tour."
