Return Of the Spanish Flu
With current treatments such as Amantadine failling fast, scientists have new hope of finding a cure for Avian Flu.
After months of painstaking research, scientists have recently exposed new evidence suggesting that the deadly strain of avian flu-H5N1, has links to the deadly flu virus which swept through Europe in 1918. In the 12 months of the pandemic 50 million to 100 million were killed, with 20% of the world population being somewhat affected. killing 25 million people in its first 25 weeks Spanish Flu outstripped AIDS in terms of deadlyness which killed 25 million people in its first 25 year. With symptoms ranging from lethargy to chest pains many victims suffered from a 'Cytokine Storm' - a rare immune reaction where patients literally drown in their own fluids.
Scientists have identified that the "Spainish flu" epedemic was able to spread as a result of the virus jumping from birds to humans. This new information may help scienctists to determine how to prevent viruses posing a threat to humans at an earlier stage. However this information will unfortunatly not be able to aid the current flight of avian flu reeking havoc in the far east, for knowing the structure of the disease is not enough.
