UNIVERSITIES WARN OF RISING TUITION FEES
Survey warns university tuition fees are likely to rise from £3,000 per annum to £10,000 to cope with the increased pressure put upon UK universities.
University fees are set to rise if universities get their way. The escalating costs that universities face may lead to tuition fees rising to £10,000 per annum. In a survey questioning leading university vice-chancellors it was found that many describe the rise in tuition fees as a necessity for the development of universities. The money coming into the universities each year is not enough to cope with the demand for research and the pressures put upon them by students and the government. The Russel Group welcome the proposal citing that in the US families understand that further education comes at a price and that many US families set up financial schemes for their children's future. The UK government are yet to disclose any information but with only £5bn of the £22bn student debt since 1991 recovered it is unlikely that the fears of the UK's leading universities are unfounded. Already students face debt that acts as a preventatitive measure against going to university and these fears do little to quell the unease amongst prospective students. The NUS vice president for welfare, Veronica King, has called for better financial advice for students, "We are deeply concerned by the reported rise in levels of stident debt". Whatever the outcome the prospects of UK university tuition fees is set to change - it is, for many people, just a matter of time.
