TV adverts that promote unhealthy food and drinks are to be banned, in hopes of reducing consumption. This has been decided by Ofcom, and a total ban is to be enforced by the end of january 2008.
Foods including high levels of salt, fat and sugars are not to be advertised during children's programmes or on children's channels. This also includes adult programmes watched by a large amount of children.
This move has been critisised by health campaigners, saying that the ban does not go far enough. They say that some of the under 16s most popular programmes are soaps, which are not covered by the ban.
