Farewell Boris...
The State Funeral former Russian President Boris Yeltsin is due to take place at the Cathederal of Christ the Saviour, which was rebuilt during his time as President.
Many flocked pay their respects to the former Russian Leader who died of heart faliure on monday the 23rd of april, aged 76. Amongst those paying their respects were the likes of current Russian President Vladimir Putin and another former Russian President, Mikhail Gorbachev. Bill Clinton and George Bush snr were also in attendence.
Boris Yeltsin had a mixed legacy, in July 1990 he resigned from the Communist party and was later elected President of the Russian Republic in the June of 1991. In 1991 he also rallied the Russian people against an anti-Gorbachev coup. Banning the Russian communist party, he quickly gained power. However, In October 1993 Russia was nearing civil war, during this time he ordered tanks to open fire on Parlaiment. In December of the next year he sent tanks into Chechnya, a part of russia with a large muslim population. He resigned from power in 1999, in his place he appointed Vladimir Putin, the current presidemt and ex-KGB officer, as his successor.
The cathederal in which his body currently rests was rebuilt under his instruction after it was destroyed by the Communist Soviet government, the once holy site turned into a swimming pool. His funereal is the first one to sanction be the Russian Orhtodox church since that of Tsar Alexander III, in 1894. The Church's Spokesman Metropolitian Kirill said "By his strength, helped the restroation of the proper role of the Russian Orthodox church in life of the country and the Russian people".
