Youngsters in the UK are already overweight and obese, due to having a bad diet. A lead researcher, Emma Boylan says "Our research shows that overweight and obese children are most susceptible to food advertising." Such food advertisements like chocolate , sweets, savoury snacks, crisps, fast foods , sugary drinks and breakfast cereals. Obese children ate 134 percent more after seeing food advertisements , compared to the tv sessions with cartoons and commercials for toys.
The biggests advertisers include McDonalds, Pepsi, Kellogg's Frosties, with its Tony the Tiger, and CoCo-Pops, KFC and Pepsi , who have used David Beckham. Due to these adverts OFCOM has announced some new controls on the advertising of unhealthy foods. From the beginning of January 2008 , a total ban will come into force for advertising junk food during programs aimed at or which appeal to under-16s.Dedicated childrens channels will have to remove all advertisements for unhealthy foods by December 2008.
Hopefully by banning these unhealthy adverts this decrease the intake of food , which will not be directly related to the advertisements shown on television.
