Family distraught after daughter's killer acquitted
The man suspected of killing Lucie Blackman, who disappeared in 2000, was acquitted in Tokyo, Japan.
Lucie Blackman, aged 21, was working as a bar hostess in Japan when in 2000, she disappeared.
Police found her body in ten pieces, with her head encased in concrete. She was hidden in a cave, in a small fishing village called Miura, situated 35 miles outside Tokyo. Joji Obara was alleged to have raped Lucie and have given her drinks spiked with sleeping pills.
When Obara was cleared of murder despite overwhelming evidence against him, for example that her body was found just 250 meters from his beach house. This was surprising because more than 99% of cases that go to court in Japan end in a conviction. Obara was sentenced with life imprisonment for the raping of nine other women. The victim's parents think that justice has not been achieved for the death of their daughter, however instead of trying to appeal together, they are locked in a battle with each other.
