Fatal disease affects toddlers
An E coli 0157 outbreak causes kidney failures in three toddlers all atteding the same nursery. Doctors are suspicious that the nusery may be the cause.
Three toddlers, all attending a nusery in Dunfermine, Fife, were sent to the Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow last night after suffering kidney failures. The three young children, Lona Balfour, Abigail Young and anonymous, are currently still in hospital under strict medication. The doctors inform the children's parents that there is a chance that they might not survive: "Obviously at this time, our thoughts and best wishes go out to the parents of the children and we pray for a speedy recovery"-Bill McIntosh, principle of college. The children are at the tender age of two. At such a young age, the body is less protcected from such diseases and recovery (if at all) is a slow process.
There have also been other cases of E coli 0157 in America. Washington investigations have discovered that this life threatning disease may have been spread through bagged salad. Amber Brister, 11 years old, fell ill after eating a bagged salad in Mineapolis, USA. Her mother, Lori Olson stated that her daughter had a kidney failure.
Although the symptons are very similar, experts beleive that the case in England was spread through the nurcery from a child that may have alreay suffered from it. The child is unknown but tests are being carried out.
