Survivors Lost at Sea Saved after 22 Days
A family trio of men have been rescued at sea from their dingy, which has acted as their home for 22 difficult days, by helicopter.
Torres Strait - John Tabo, 38, son John, 20, and nephew Tom, 16, have been saved and safely brought back to land after spending 22 days on their 5 meter dingy, adrift at sea. The trio were discovered 18 nautical miles southwest of Murray Island in the Torres strait, where they had been sailing to pick up footballers from Yorke Island.
Cyclone Monica caught the family off guard and left them stranded in the ocean, fighting for survival against winds of up to 30 knots, living on a diet of raw squid and rain water.
Thanks to modern technology and text messaging, the three were able to message family members back on shore and were brought safely back home by helicopter. The survivors are being treated in hospital for severe sunburns and dehydration.
The relatives of the victims report that they are well, yet lack severly in weight.
