After 22 days three survivors were found 18 miles off Murray Island after living off squid and rainwater.
John Tabo, 38 his son John, 20 and nephew Tom, 16 were found 18 miles southwest of Murray Island after being ship wrecked by Cyclone Monica. They were found yesterday after 22 days in a 5m dinghy, living off raw squid and rain water. On April 17 the trio left their home island to pick up footballers on Yorke Island (40km off their home island).
The trio didn't make it to Yorke Island due to meeting Cyclone Monica. The storms winds reached 30knots (350km/h). The storm affected northern Australia from the 17th of April until the 26th of April and is the strongest tropical cyclone ever recorded in the southern hemisphere. They survived by eating raw squid and rainwater and used items from their dinghy for shelter.
The survivors suffered from sunburn and dehydration and relatives said that all three had lost a considerable amount of weight. Relatives of all three recieved seven text messages yesterday asking for food, fuel and water. The survivors are now in hospital recieving treatment.
