Beckham quits as captain of England
Football star in tears as he resigns from the role of captain
After almost six years as England captain, David Beckham has resigned following England's World Cup defeat to Portugal on Saturday.
Beckham was described as being almost in tears as he gave the press conference at the England camp in southern Germany, saying that he felt a new captain should lead the team as manager Steve McClaren takes the reins from Sven-Goran Eriksson.
He also stated that he had made the decision some time ago, but felt that it was right to announce his decision after England fell from the tournament at the weekend.
The most likely candidates for the role of captain are John Terry and Steven Gerrard, who would appar to be the people's choice. Peter Taylor has also claimed that John Terry is "the obvious choice" to replace Beckham.
