As Becks Steps down, the search for his successor begins...
Former England captain David Beckham steps down, and the search for the next begins.
After an emotional press conference on Sunday, David Beckham has revelaed that he is stepping down as England captain, and so the search for his successor begins. After England crashed out of the World Cup to Portugal on penalties, Beckham revealed that it was 'the right time to pass on the captains armband' as the national team enters a new managerial era under Steve McClaren.
So the hunt begins for the next leader the national side, with John Terry emerging as the early favourite. Currently at odds of 1/2 Terry has proved himself to be a leader as he guided his club side Chelsea to two league titles in a row. After World Class performances in all of England's games, there is no shortage of support for the 25-year-old defender, and with 29 caps to his name, there is no surprise that he is the hot favourite to be the next to don the captain's armband.
Other potential future Captains include Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard who, lead Liverpool to Champions League victory and FA Cup glory has earned him betting odds of 2/1, whilst the veteran fullback Gary Neville has also been mentioned. Other players also named include Frank Lampard (8/1), Rio Ferdinand (12/1) and Micheal Owen (14/1).
