Taylor Backs Terry for England Role
Peter Taylor has backed John Terry to take over as England captain.
Peter Taylor has backed John Terry to take over as England captain. The former England caretaker-manager has given his support to the Chelsea and England centre back to suceed David Beckham as England captain.
The new Palace boss originally handed the captain's armband to Beckham in 2000 but the Madrid winger stepped down on Sunday after another disappointing display at the World Cup. Terry and Liverpool playmaker Steven Gerrard have been tipped as the bookies favourite to take over the role but Taylor is putting his money on the Chelsea skipper.
Taylor claimed "John Terry has done a superb job for Chelsea over the past couple of years. He is young and is an inspirational type of player" This would be a change from the era of Sven, the silent Swede, and his sidekick Beckham.
Despite Terry leading Chelsea to back-to-back title wins it is the PFA player of the year, Steven Gerrard, who is currently the fans favourite. In a Sky Sports survey the Liverpool star received 58% of the vote, ahead of Terry with 38%. However, the decision rests with the new England manager Steve McLaren as he aims to end 40 years of hurt.
