At least 34 people were killed and 20 seriously injured when an underground train in the port of Valencia left the tracks and overturned yesterday. Emergency services rushed to the scene and over 150 were evacuated from the station after the dramatic derailment.
Up to 250 police and 20 firefighters sealed off the streets outside the station as the injured were taken away in ambulances. The train had just left Jesus station in the Patraix neighbourhood when it sped off the track and overturned leaving 100 people trapped. The crash occured at around 1pm, when many Spanish workers start their commute home for lunch.
Cesar Hernandez, 21, left the scene of the crash with many other blooded, sooty survivors. He described the incident "The train suddenly gathered spped and started reeling from side to side, then it stopped suddenly. There was lots of smoke and confusion"
Authorities have dimissed terrorism claims and an official claimed "It seems this unfortunate accident was caused by excess speed and a wheel breaking". However, this is not the first accident to occur on this Number One rail. Last September two trains collided on the same track in Valencia killing 29 people.
However, this is another devastating accident which comes at a time which is unnervingly close to the anniversary of the London bombings.
