Carragher In Phone-In Frenzy
Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher called Talksport Drivetime in response to allegations of him not having the stomach to play for England.
Carragher, 29, called the popular radio show just after 5pm, due to a shocking statement made by presenter Adrian Durham.
"Don't ever call me a bottler on the radio with all these thousands of people listening!" Carragher announced to the stunned presenters and listeners, "I've never played centre-half for England to be honest. I've never played well for England because I've played a lot of the time at full-back. At centre-half I've never played as much as I've deserved.
The radio station were so astounded by Carragher's sudden phone call that they believed it was a hoax, asking for the Liverpool player's personal details and date of birth in order for him to be put through to Adrian Durham and co-presenter Micky Quinn.
A local newspaper confirmed this week that Carragher had intentions to retire after Euro 2008s qualifiers, but being in constant contact with Steve McLaren, the England manager persuaded Carra to not make any decisions until after the next international friendly on 22nd August against Germany.
Durham then asked Carragher why he was not prepared to fight for his England place.
"There's that many people ahead of me. It's a game of options, but when you're my age they're all younger than me. They will improve- I won't at my age."
"I'm 29 , I've been doing it for eight years and obviously I haven't proved it enough, so it's not going to change now is it? It's not like I've just got on the squad and jumped out."
Micky Quinn, also the former Coventry City and Newcastle United Striker then asked the liverpool star if he thought he would regret retiring.
"Time will tell, but for me now it's time to concentrate on my Liverpool career. All I can do is play as good as I can for Liverpool."
