A Dutch of class - New wonderboy signing for Liverpool
Dutch wonderboy Ryan Babel is said to become Liverpool's second big signing for the summer of 2007.
Ryan Babel, who currently plays for Holland's under 21s, is set to become Liverpool's second big signing for a price of £13.5 million. The initial bid for £10 million was knocked back by Ajax but they then returned with a improved offer of £13.5 million.
Babel is set to pack his bags for Mersyside and his arrival will send Liverpool's boss Rafa Benitezs spending up to £35 million in less then a week after also signing Atletico Madrid's Fernando Torres. Martin Van Geel, Ajax's technical director said that "Liverpool are very serious about signing Babel and have made an offer a lot higher than before."
Babel is the hottest young thing to come out of Holland and has been likened to Thierry Henry by coach Ten Cate. It is a likening however that he is prepared to live with. Babel added "Physically our bodies are similar and I think that our way of playing and priorities on the pitch are alike. Just like Henry, I like to come inside from the left so when you look at it there are similarites."
At the moment Babel is still on holiday in Surinam after helping Holland's under 21s win the European Championships.
Rafa Benitez is also keen on signing West Ham's Yossi Benayoun. The only problem there is with the Hammers' insistence on around £6 million for the Israeli midfielder which is nearly double what Liverpool have offered so far.
