Game Over for Sony

Sony's newest PlayStation, released last November, is now being marketed at $100 less than previously planned. The game system faces huge competition from the Nintendo Wii and the Xbox 360, the latter having been released a year before. US consumers have purchased 1.38 million PlayStation 3s, whilst a 1.46 million increase in sales, tracked by the NPD Group for the Nintendo Wii, shows a clear division in the marketing of game stations. Will Greenwald from CNET.com explains that, "The $600 price was turning off potential buyers." The $30 billion per year industry for video games sees an upgrade from Sony in an attempt to resell the PlayStation 3 in order to keep up with Microsoft and Nintendo next month. The Nintendo Wii appears to have had greater appeal to gamers because of its unique motion sensor technology, seeing it dominate the competition since it's release alongside the PlayStation 3. The release of the Xbox a year before the PlayStation and Wii has seen sales of 5.5 million; this puts it ahead of the other game systems. Whether it will maintain this lead with the two new systems now on the market, along with the upgraded PlayStation 3 on the market next month, is yet to be seen.
