Juror arrested for "unique" contempt of court.
A female juror has ben arrested, after it was discovered that she had been listening to her MP3 player during the presentation of evidence in a murder trial.
Ruhela Kahnom, from Bows in East London, was arrested last Wednesday following her disqualification from jury service at a Blackfriars Court trial. Ms Kahnom apparently used a traditional Hajib headscarf to conceal an MP3 player, and has now been accused of listening to it during the trial upon which she swore to deliberate fairly. Doubts had been raised throughout Ms Kahnom's tenure as juror, partly due to her request to skip the trial in order to complete a training course on the internet. Indeed, lawyers had asked the judge for an earlier removement of the juror. However, it was the uncovering of the MP3 player that ultimately decided the situation. Ms Kahmon has successfully applied for bail, but faces trial for contempt of court. If convicted, she may pay an unlimited fine, and also time in prison. Representatives of the law have claimed that this is a "unique" incident, and have also suggested that Ms Kahmon has a lack of respect for the legal system.
