boy recovering from head decapitation
12 year old is recovering from head decapitation whilst driving his 1000cc mini between 40 and 50mph when he crashed in to a barrier.
on the 24th of september, 11 year old chris stewart went to tongham motor club near alton, hampshire to race his mini when his tyre burst sending him into a barrier- disconnecting his skull from his spinal chord and disconected his tongue.
His parents; John and Debbie Stewart looked on in horror as a St. John's ambulance and fire crew struggled for 90minutes to free him. The ambulance took him staright into South Hampton General Hospital.
Mother, Debbie Stewart, told us that it was 'devastating having to ask if he'd be all right and being told they couldn't make any promises.'
Doctor Evan Davies operated on Chris for six hours where they reattached his skull to his vertebrate with metal plates and bone grafts using screws to attach it to the spine, this procedure is called occipital cervical fusion.
The ligaments between the skull and spine were torn and though in usual circumstances most expected outcome with internal decapitation is fatal chris is expected to make a almost full recovery.
The doctors gave chris 1 year to start walking and was reduced to tears when chris was walking after just 3 weeks. he is expected to go home for three weeks for christmas and is expected to make a almost full recovery. chris only had cars on his mind saying "i cant wait to drive again. " i guess boys will be boys. lets just hope he will wear a better helmet.
