Brave firefighter returns - a limb short
Shaun Parker returned to the Devon Fire and Rescue Service after suffering an 'industrial accident'.
Thirty-seven year old Shaun Parker returned to the Devon Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS) four and a half years after having an accident outside of work in 2001 which resulted in the amputation of his right leg below the knee.
Parker: "I was determined to get back on the appliance. When something like this happens you can't stay at home and think about it, you've got to get on with life."
Parker had to pass basic training courses, this highlighted his determination to return to work and live the life he wanted.
Parker: "One of the trainers on the course said he could not tell the difference between what I could do and the other people on the course."
The artificial limb was tested for strength to prove its ability in an emergency. The leg has been designed to withstand temperatures of up to 300'C so that it can cope under fire conditions.
Chief fire officer Paul Young has publically showed his support of Parker's return and his determination and commitment to the service.
Young: "His remarkable recovery from a horrific accident is testament to his dedication and hard work."
Since his return Shaun Parker has had huge amounts of publicity, even appearing on 'Richard and Judy'. The nation are amazed at his dedication to his job and his ability to 'bounce back' after such a fall.
