Landslides in the hills surrounding Chittagong caused by the annual monsoons have buried over 100 people in deep mud, and many more are still missing. The carnage has had terrible consequences for the small port. Chittagongs fire chief Rashedul Islam said that "In one spot alone we found 14 dead bodies" This incedent has occured due to to failed attempts to stop the clearing of land for housing in the area by the government. Landslides frequently occur in the area, which should of been warning enough to avoid this disaster.
