Dame Helen was the favourite to win the award and add to her already impressive accomplishments, including, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and screen actors guild prize. Her achievment stood out on a night of dissapointment for British nominees, and a Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said she was 'sure that the Queen will be pleased'.

It has emerged in the last few days that Dame Helen will now meet the Queen for lunch. It appears that the Queen has invited director Stephen Frears and screenwriter Peter Morgan aswel as Mirren to Buckingham palace.
