Mr Le Pen, who came second in the 2002 election is again making a long-shot bid for the position of President, and is no stranger to controversy. No doubt his chances will be hindered by past controversial comments. He is infamous for his description of the Nazi gas chambers as "a point of detail" in world war 2; his description of the 9/11 attacks as being "just an incident". It appears that one of the only assets Mr Le Pen has at this time is his daughter Marine who is supporting his campaign. It seems she has less of her father's rough edges and is responsible for directing Le Pen's campaign towards a more modern and less extreme form. She has argued that "French people are losing the joy of being French" and that "France is going down the drain. Marine has told her supporters that the French people need a statesman, a man with character who can give them their sovereignty back, that man, she believes is Jean Marie Le Pen.
Despite this recent reforming of his image, Le Pen still represents a too traditional right wing view and his extremist views on immigrants are unlikely to gain him the necessary votes for success in the up and coming elections.
