Iran faces increased sanctions amid nuclear row
While President Ahmadinejad intensifies the Nuclear standoff, the UN discusses tougher sanctions.
Despite the recent pressure exerted on Iran and her fledgling Nuclear program, the country has failed to meet the UN deadline set in December. Now that the impetus is back with the UN, they are looking at potentially increasing the already substantial list of sanctions being applied to Iran. Representatives of the five permanent members of the Security Council - France, the USA, the UK, Russia and China - met on Monday to discuss how they might stall Iran's Nuclear enrichment programme. President Ahmadinejad has long defended his right to possess Nuclear technology and seems to be resolute in his determination to continue in its development. He claims that the technology will be used solely for energy purposes and peaceful means, and through this intends to achieve legitimacy for the country's Nuclear intentions. The UN council has been debating various forms of sanction that might potentially be impressed upon Iran. Among these is the plan to apply Travel bans which could limit the movement of Iranian officials and personnel involved in the Nuclear programme. Even at home pressure seems to be mounting on Ahmadinejad and his government. The man at the head of the Mojahedin of the Islamic Revolution Organisation, Behzad Nabavi, an influential political figure, is inciting internal reaction to the President's "confrontational manner". Meanwhile the UN is yet to come to any decision and Ahmadinejad continues the Nuclear development.
