A stoppage time fracas marred the enthralling encounter between Chelsea and Arsenal which saw three players sent off. Emmanuel Adebayor, Kolo Toure and John Obi Mikel were all sent off in a brawl which brought imminent shame to the beautiful game. Chelsea have appealed against Mikel's sending off as have Arsenal for the Ivory Coast striker, Adebayor, due to mistaken identity. This may bring Eboue into the frame whose raucus behaviour was missed by Webb on the edge of the melee. However, Adebayor may yet still be punished by the FA due to his furious reaction to the red card resulting in Cesc Fabregas and physio Gary Lewin having to refrain him.
The FA will deliberate today as to the punishments of the three players sent off and Eboue, barring the success of their respective appeals. It is most probable that Adebayor will be banned for five games and Mikel, Toure and Eboue are likely to be banned for three games. However, the real issue at hand is the devastating effect this brawl will have on youngsters who see these players as rolemodels.
While both clubs will be sanctioned and fined it is unlikely that Wenger and Mourinho will be fined or disciplined, although both manages ran onto the pitch to separate the fighting players. This action by the managers was frowned upon by referees' chief Keith Hackett, saying, "The managers should not have gone on to the pitch, absolutely not".
