Paintings sell in a art auction for $15.7 million
May 11, Roy Lichtenstein's wall sized pop art painting ''sinking sun'' sank last night at Sothedy's holdings Inc.'s contemporary art auction in New York, selling for $15.7 Million, less than the auction houses aggressive estimate.
Total sales for the auction were $128.8 million, more than the presale high estimate and nearly double the year ago tally. That suggests demand for big name contemporary and postwar art continues to be exuberant.
The sale kicked off with startling prices even for lesser known artists. Painters in their 30's and 40's such as Cecily Brown and lisa yuskavage more than quacrupled their previous records.
' ' Its a good time to sell ,'' said Mark Glimcher of the pacewildenstein gallery in new york. '' there's a crazy market out there. and theres a huge competition over things people didnt used to compete over.''
