G8 pressure Israel and Lebanon for a ceasefire
The Group of Eight (G8) leaders met on Monday to discuss the Middle East crisis and have urged Israel to restrain it's offensive but for Hezbollah to make the first move to end the war.
The G8 are concerned about the war between Israel and Lebanon that intensified today when Israeli air strikes killed 23 people in Lebanon. The conflict began when Hezbollah, a Shiite Muslim militia that holds seats in Lebanon's government, captured two Israeli soldiers. Israel has declared that there will be no ceasfire until the soldiers are returned.
According to an AFP count over 170 have been killed, and the death toll is still adding up. Israel air strikes took at least 19 lives in Lebanon on Monday and overnight raids on the northern Lebanese coast killed nine Lebanese soldiers and damaged the homes of Hezbollah officials.
The war has no signs of receding, and the G8 are worried that they may need to interefere and have been trying to evacuate their citizens from Lebanon. Britain has said that a rapid deployment team has arrived in Beirut to support the possible evacuation of 3,500 to 4000 British families and 10,000 dual nationals registered in Lebanon.
