West Ham Fans Cause Havoc In Palermo, Sicily
20 English and 1 Sicilian arrested, more than a dozen injured, bottles, chairs and cans thrown, in footbal fueled Sicily brawl.
"The Hammers Vs. The Mafia" This is the slogan that fueled a full scale riot between the Palermo and West Ham supporters after a dissapointing 3-0 loss to West Ham. After the game finished angered fans met with the Palermo fans, causing the riot in the district center involved bottles, chairs and cans being thrown between the opposing fans, leaving the Sicilian streets covered in glass and debrey.
Riot Police were called into the Teatro Massimo district, to try and break up the 500 scrapping fans, but were attacked also, resulting in it taking more than an hour to calm down the rioters. The tension was caused by West Ham fans wearing T-shirts that had be sold at there home stadium in London two weeks before, bearing the angering slogan "The Hammers Vs. The Mafia" refering to Sicilys' link with the Italian criminal underworld.
20 English fans and one Palermo fan have been arrested and will face an Italian court later this week, hoping to free themselves from the charges being pressed against them. A Scotland Yard spokesman told us "Officers have travelled to Palermo to work with the Italian authorities... As part of the liason, Officers will gather any evidence available and use it to seek appropriate actions against those involved in disorder."
