SADDAM TRIAL 'FLAWED' SAYS HUMAN RIGHTS GROUP
There has been a lot of talk about Saddam Husseins trial within the Middle East. Different countries have different views. Here are some of them.
THE TRIAL
Saddam used to be the president of Iraq, but was removed from power by US forces who invaded the country in 2003. His trial was very dramatic, and at the end of it he was sentenced to death. After he was sentenced there were celebrations across Iraqs capital Baghdad. However there are fears that his supporters may cause trouble.
VIEWS ACROSS THE MIDDLE-EAST
Iraqi sources say 'The death penalty placed on Saddam did not surprise anyone as it was expected from the first day of the trial. The 'trial in verdict' is a new fiction series being sold to the people of Iraq to fool Iraqis into believeing that authority has been transferred to the people of Iraq'. Another Iraqi source says, 'Iraqis still view Saddam as hero. The verdict will increase his popularity and will increase hatred of Americans, in the Middle East. This will threaten US aims in the region'. The Lebanese Daily Star says, 'If Saddam is eventually hanged, Iraqis will be rid of a tyrannical dictator who shamelessly brutalised his own people'. Fianlly the Human Rights Group says, 'The trial was flawed' and that all the attention was placed on the people Saddam killed, rather then his method of ruling his country.
