HAT CAMERAS FOR POLICE FIGHTING ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR
Police officers are to be equipped with head-mounted video cameras to help in the fight against anit-social behaviour, it was made final today.
A team of eight police officers in North London will use cameras to record evidence of youths causing trouble. Police say the cameras are clearly visible, and that they hope it will stop youths from misbehaving, as well as an evidence tool. It is said that the video images could be used in court as evidence to support a prosecution, and in support of an application for an ASBO. If the cameras are a success, they will be used by officers all over London. Detective Superintendant Richard Wood said 'The cameras, which are being piloted by our Safer Neighborhood officers, will act as an excellent deterrent for youngsters intent on causing trouble'.
The cameras, each the around the size of an AA battery, will be fitted on to the side of the officers' headger. They record high quality digital images which are then sent back and stored in a special utility belt. The cameras can record up to 12 hours - the maximum length of any police officers' shift - each pack costs £1800. They will be used for the first time by officers from a Safer Neighborhood team based in Haringey, North London, this week. Lets hope they will make a difference, and make London a safer city.
