Teens could face fines if they quit school before 18
Gordan Brown is planning to force childern to remain in school until 18, two more years than at present. He indicated in his Budget speech on Wednesday that every teenager has a right to stay on in education until the age of 18. At present, 24% of 16-18 year olds are not in training or in further education. Tony Blair, the Prime Minister, is keeping education as a top priority because has indicated there may be a skills crisis in the future. One incentive presently used to keep young people in education is an educational maintenance allowance (EMAs) and this has encouraged 76% of 11-18 year olds to stay in school. However Alan Johnson, Education Secretary, would be in favour of fining those students who refuse further education or training. It has been said that the forecasts of the number of unskilled jobs in Britian will fall to 600,000 by 2020 by around £3.2m today, also the age of leaving school will be 17 to 2013 and 18 to 2015.
