Budget 2007
Gordon Brown, Chancellor of the Exchequer has made his 11th and probably his final budget, before the Houses of Commons.
Gordon Brown was described by Lord Turnball as a ruthless Stalinist and treating his colleagues with comtempt, but today Gordon Brown put his critics to rest by placing more investment into schools and hospitals.
Today the potential future Prime Minster also imposed increases on tax duty and on alcohol including a 5p increase on wine. He has also cut 2p off the basic rate of income tax and has axed the 10p starter rate which has caused may people to be worried. Today the Tories said" lower earners would have to pay more Income tax." The Lib Dems have also expressed some concern saying "the poor will be subsdising the rich" .
The big winners today are families earning between £17,000 and £42,000. Those earning over £43,000 will have to pay an extra £20 more. However is also believed that 3.5 million people earning less than £17,000 will find it hard to pay income tax since the starter rate of 10p was abolished. Many will have to rely on working tax credit which many have described as a system that is failing, leaving many people having to pay back money that they shouldn't have been given in the first place.

Gordon Brown, in delivering his final Budget, is now almost certainly moving into no. 10 Downing Street.
